The Big Easy Durban and De Toren Wines really made an impression with their pairing event, coupling great boutique wines with the pure artistry that is the culinary expertise of Janine Fourie.
The De Toren vineyard is perched between 200 and 400 metres above sea level on the Polkadraai Hills near Stellenbosch – almost neighbours with Ernie Els Wines which is situated only 20 kilometres away.
Although only 22 hectares – this innovative estate has produced South Africa’s first full five varietal Bordeaux blends.
Gentle winemaking and modern technology are combined in creating the different wines. On this estate the blends are first decided upon before planting the vines – using different rootstocks and soil types. Each variety, clone and root stock is matched to the soil type to gain as much complexity from the vineyard as possible. The vines’ position and the cooling effect of the south-easterly wind forms a perfect micro-climate for the production of De Toren’s world-class red wines.
