Mayor James Nxumalo hosted US Ambassador Patrick Gaspard and US Consul-General Frances Chisholm at the Durban City Hall last week. The ambassador and his delegation paid a courtesy visit to Durban to talk about possible co-operations with the City.
Ambassador Gaspard said he was excited to be in Durban. He said: “We have a good relationship with Durban. The United States is the number one recipient of exports from KwaZulu-Natal and we are looking to strengthen that. Over the past three years through President Barrack Obama’s leadership, US exports to the African continent have increased by 40% and South Africa accounts for much of it.”
He added that: “There are many more opportunities for our private sector to engage on the ground and be in partnerships with South Africa. There are also opportunities for our public sector to partner with the City on infrastructure, public safety and service delivery.”
Nxumalo said the City hoped to further strengthen good relations that already existed. He said: “We have engaged the US through our Sister Cities partnership. We are also in constant discussions with Chicago and New Orleans. EThekwini’s main focus is boosting the economy. We are keen to attract business with the public and private sector by creating opportunities and investments.”
