The Collaboration of The Year #HartfordAt9th
What an evening the “Hartford House In The City” collaboration at 9th Avenue Bistro was! The teams worked incredibly well together to bring us an absolute experience of a meal. From beginning to end every single dish on Chef Constantijn’s menu was carefully and superbly brought to life, as if by the stroke of an artists brush.
Chef Constantijn Hahndieck of Hartford House and Chefs Graham Nielson & Charlie Laikin of 9th Avenue Bistro were absolutely amazing – plating over 70 meals at a time in one sitting can’t have been an easy feat – and I can tell you that every single plate was perfect. I can’t believe we are so fortunate as to have all this talent in our city! I feel like very lucky that I had the opportunity to be a part of such an exceptional culinary experience.
We started off with a selection of artisanal breads and a pair of spreads that were just superb.
Next up was the best use of cauliflower I have ever come across (and I really don’t like cauliflower) – absolutely delicious with delicate flavours and the perfect gouda croquette.
Second course was a chargrilled line fish (Kabeljou) with Jerusalem Artichokes, pomello & seaweed tea. What a sensational fish dish – most agreed it was one of the best they’d ever had.
The Midlands Quail followed and the confit leg and seared breast together with sharp peppercorns and chickweed with red onion was a beautifully rounded flavour.
The final meat course was succulent, flavourful and perfectly seasoned lamb, both a seared best end, and braised leg with lamb emulsion and barley. A real treat for me as a lamb lover. (The whole room was silent for that course…)
But what really stole the show was “The Granadilla Vine”; a delicate ensemble of flash frozen flavours, and sharp granadilla. The “smoking” dish made it’s way through the restaurant to many, many “oohs” and “ah’s”. This was by far the best dessert I’ve ever eaten, and I will likely be remembering this particular sweet treat for many years to come. I’m still not entirely sure what was on the plate – but I AM sure that it was stupendous!
There’s good news for those who were unfortunately enough to miss out on this spectacular evening – plans are afoot for a repeat next year!
