In celebration of Hilton Worldwide’s annual Global Month of Service, Hilton Durban staff and guests dedicated their time helping the community. Throughout October, volunteers from Hilton Durban have dedicated their time helping the community, their fellow Team Members as well as our guests. Community service is a tradition embedded in the company for nearly 100 years, and throughout the year Team Members dedicate their time, passion and unique brand of hospitality to create positive change in their local communities. Hilton Durban’s efforts are a part of Hilton’s month-long celebration of the company’s year-round commitment to serving and enriching the communities where we live, work and travel.
“Global Week of Service is one of the many ways we show our commitment to our local community while delivering great guest experiences. We are encouraged our, neighbors and Team Members to join us in support of this global effort,” said Markus Fritz, general manager, Hilton Durban.”
Hilton Durban Recycled Runway Show
In celebration of Hilton’s ongoing commitment to the environment, teams participated in a regional Fashion Show where garments were made entirely from recycled material. The event, titled “Recycled Runway” received entries from various departments across the hotel. Team Members made the garments from material such as plastic binbags, cardboard and even an old lampshade which was turned into a fashionable hat! The aim was to create a greater awareness of the role we all play in sustaining the environment which supports our hotel, our guest and our teams.
Hilton Durban Karaoke Competition
Team members had great fun at the hotel’s annual Karaoke Idols competition which drew responses from across all departments. It was clear that the Hilton Durban boasts some fine talent which made the judges’ decision a tough one! Team members were treated to popcorn and cupcakes while cheering on their favorite songs and singers on the day. The aim of this event was pure fun and some friendly competition.
Hilton Durban Spa Pampering for Guests
To show our appreciation a spa pampering session for all guests that were in the hotel on 21st October was set up. Unique Spa located on the B level of the hotel, sponsored the massages in the lobby and surprised our guests as they checked in.
Hilton Durban partners with Ernie Els Golf Day to raise funds for Autism
As part of the global Els for Autism vision, South Africa has been a key focus for Ernie and Liezl Els, and in January 2011 the Ernie Els Centre for Autism (EEC) in Johannesburg was founded with a goal to create a service that would allow lower-resourced families of children on the spectrum in South Africa with free access to effective treatment. The Ernie Els Centre currently provide around 100 such families comprehensive guidance on how to use best practices in education and autism treatment to teach their child. This is done by providing free access to an online focused treatment tool called Rethink First. This intervention utilizes Applied Behaviour Analysis principles, which has been shown to be the most effective teaching tool for individuals with autism. The EEC trained facilitators use this multi-faceted
elearning solution to provide customized interventions for each family. Given that the centres reach is nationwide, the EEC provides support in numerous ways, including in-centre sessions (in Braamfontein, Gauteng), as well as telephonic and Skype guidance. This is done on average every 2 to 4 weeks, with the intention of participants practicing and incorporating these skills into their daily life.
Hilton Durban and The Big Easy hold Soup Kitchen for the homeless
Hilton Durban partnered with the Big Easy, to host a soup kitchen at Addington Beach for the homeless residents in this area. More than 250 bowels of soup and bread rolls were handed to the homeless as part of the Hilton’s commitment to giving back to the community through such initiatives.
Global Month of Service is Hilton Worldwide’s largest annual community service initiative and mobilizes hundreds of thousands of Team Members from every region to engage in numerous volunteer events and activities happening around the world. Volunteers offer their time to support a wide range of projects including conserving natural resources, mentoring and training young people, creating amenity care packages for communities in need, collecting surplus food and distributing to underserved communities and aiding local communities devastated by disaster.
Since its inaugural service celebration in 2012, Hilton volunteers have provided support to more than 6,700 projects worldwide contributing more than 300,000 hours of community service. Last year in just one week, Hilton hosted more than 3,500 projects in 86 countries, volunteering more than 150,000 hours. The company aims to complete 3,750 projects across its global footprint.
