The love of horses is shared by many in KZN, and nothing can quite come close to an experience on horseback…

Experience the South Coast on horseback:

SELSDON PARK ESTATE offers rides through the unspoilt beaches, lush coastal forests with paranormic sea views

LAKE ELAND HORSE TRAILS offers rides through the Oribi Gorge Nature reserve, offering the opportunity to view scenic cliffs and game, eg. kudu, impala hartebees etc

FISHRIVER Horse Safaris offers 2-5 hour Horse Trails in the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve.

They offer beach, beach and game & game rides on the south coast, and can tailor packages to suit you, with beginners and experienced riders being accommodated well by the knowledgeable team.

Beach & Game Rides: For first timers, beginners, intermediate and advanced riders A two hour ride that will take you through the reserve to the beach and back through open grasslands and bushveld. Look out for rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, nyala, waterbuck, duiker, impala and other game as we find our way through thick valley bushveld, dune forests and open plains. Enjoy breathtaking views of the Great Fish River mouth and stunning coastline of the Indian ocean as we ride through shifting sand dunes and secluded beaches.

Game Rides:  For first timers, beginners, intermediate and advanced riders On this ride you will enjoy and experience the excitement of viewing game from horseback. This is an opportunity to view game without interfering with their behaviour. The ride takes you through thick bush, streams, open plains and vegetated sand dunes. All types of game frequent these habitats and good sightings including rhino, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and other game can be expected.

Horse riding from a few hours to a whole day outing.

EXTREME RIDE – 5hrs:  This is a game and beach ride for the more advanced and experienced riders only! A fast paced ride in which you will cover big distances whilst actively tracking and searching for white rhino, buffalo and other game. This is an exhilarating adventure ride and no two rides are the same. We adjust the route according to game movements and riders abilities. (min of 4 people)

The Midlands Near Durban On Horseback

Durban on horseback will give you a new perspective of this sunny city:

HORSEBACK BEACH ADVENTURES in Durban offers leisurely beach strolls on horseback. Be thrilled by a faster ride if you have more experience and confidence. The 12km bridle trail meanders through some lovely bush paths with fascinating colourful and unusual birds to spy, alongside market gardens and onto a peaceful beach.  You may choose to ride the full distance without stopping. Or you could opt to dismount for a most welcome half way rest, down some light refreshments, & possibly take your horse for a swim or roll in the shallows if the weather is just right! Or use your break opportunity to visit the mangroves on a pleasant boardwalk if weather is unsuitable for horses’ swim, or if this is your taste of fun.

NEWMARKET STABLES is a fun and friendly yard for all disciplines.

Newmarket offers riding lessons to people of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Lessons are offered from Monday to Saturday. Newmarket Stables is currently home to the Durban Pony Club. The pony club has been around for the last 40 years or so, and in its day the Durban Pony Club was a force to be reckoned with.

They are a well-established riding school and stable yard with many years of riding experience and are recognized by Durban and Sapphire Coast Tourism Board and have had riders from more than 15 different countries ride with them.

Rides will take you through coastal vegetation and onto miles of open beaches crossing scenic lagoons. All their horses are well schooled and suitable for children and adults.  Upon request they offer pony parties, lessons, weddings and a rural bush rides. Three times a year they offer a scenic 6 hour ride to a 70m waterfall.

Guided Beach Ride: The duration of the beach ride is 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the level of experience of the group riding. We go as fast as the least experienced rider’s comfort level, however the experienced rider is permitted to canter and gallop when it is safe and advised to do so.

GIBA GORGE HORSE Trails offers family day trips with kids activities like horse trails & pony rides, Giba Gorge Horse Trails is a Horse Riding and Trail Centre in the Giba Gorge Valley. Magical horse rides throughout the beautiful valley. Quiet time by the streams and waterfalls and exploring the valleys’ rich fauna and flora, streams and waterfalls. Trails are all guided and they cater for experienced and beginner riders alike.  Swallow Farm by the river is a great venue for picnics and parties.

They offer 1-3 hour out-rides, half-hour trails & Pony walks for the younger kids.

Safari Horse ride

The Kwazulu-Natal Midlands has long been known as that equine region of KZN,  with passionate equestrian experts as well as a vast variety of terrain to explore on horseback.  History buffs can explore the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields region on horseback and follow in the hoof prints of soldiers who fought here. Numerous wars between the Zulus, the Boers and the British were waged in this area, which has remained largely undeveloped and unspoiled.

INVERSANDA FARM in the Dargle area, close to Midmar Dam, has a selection of horses for guests to choose from, as well as stabling for those who wish to bring their horses on holiday with them.

ZULU WATERS GAME RESERVE near Estcourt offers horse riding tours of the reserve to guests as part of the package. Wildlife that riders may get close to during their rides includes buffalo, rhino, wildebeest, zebra and a variety of antelope.

KARKLOOF HORSE ADVENTURES offers three-hour rides through pine plantations, with scenery that includes six waterfalls. Zebra and antelope are some of the wildlife you will encounter on this adventure.

KLEINBOSCH ESTATE offers a unique package of country activities all at one location on a working farm with Nguni cattle and thoroughbred horses. This exquisite setting will soothe your cares away if you just let the good country air into your lungs as you indulge in the assorted action on hand.Explore 500 hectares of farmland and natural bush – which includes 7 dams and part of the original Voortrekker road.

In the iSimangaliso Wetland Park – South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.  BHANGAZI HORSE SAFARIS offers beach rides, game rides or a combination of both. The beach rides along kilometres of pristine sand alongside the warm Indian Ocean offer regular sightings of hippo and crocs, and seasonal sightings of whales and turtles. Game rides through the nature reserve section allow you to ride alongside herds of zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog and other extraordinary game.
