Oyster Box Hotel – Staff The Biggest Asset In Service Delivery

Recognised as beacons of excellence within South Africa’s hospitality industry, the year has got off to a flying start for the Red Carnation Hotel Collection (RCHC) in South Africa. The Oyster Box, scooped the prestigious No#1 spot as the ‘Top Hotel in South Africa’ in the 2017 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, with sister hotel The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in Cape Town, also in the Top 10, at sixth place.

While the hotels’ desirable locations and beautifully appointed accommodation and restaurants attract guests from all corners of the world, it’s the excellent service and attention to detail provided by the well-trained staff, that keep guests coming back time and again.

“There is no doubt that a significant part of our success is our incredible Staff,” says Wayne Coetzer. “They are at the coalface, dealing with guests day in and day out and how they handle a situation or interact with a guest, can make or break the quality of the visitor experience.”

With staff at the core of their operations, the Red Carnation Hotels Collection in South Africa, annually sends a group of staff to London for the Red Carnation Staff Appreciation Party. The event is held at a prestigious venue to honour and recognise outstanding staff members as chosen by the management teams, from all the properties within the Group’s hotel portfolio worldwide – 17 hotels in all and is personally hosted by Red Carnation’s founder and president Mrs. Bea Tollman, in recognition of the hard work, dedication and commitment of the employees.

The winning employees are chosen from across all the departments within the hotel including spa, food and beverage, maintenance, human resources, kitchen, front of house and housekeeping. For many this is not only their first overseas trip, but the first aeroplane journey and for some the first time leaving their hometown / city.

During the week in London, prior to the Gala Dinner, staff gain valuable exposure to international hotel standards, as they work side by side with their London counterparts in one of the group’s London hotels.

This year over 30 people will be attending from the three South African hotels including Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa and The Oyster Box. Staff within the group are ofen transferred to other properties in the portfolio both locally and internationally, to gain new skills and build career experience with a number of them remaining part of the Red Carnation family for many years.

WAYNE COETZER: General Manager, The Oyster Box

“We pride ourselves on recruiting people who not only can do the job, but also have strong personalities and character; and this comes through in their approach to their work,” Coetzer continues. “In addition, we invest significant time and money, across the group, in the training and development of our staff. This is an opportunity of lifetime and a huge individual achievement for each person and I have no doubt it will make a huge professional and personal impact on each one.”

RORY DU PLESSIS: General Manager, Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat

“The Staff Appreciation Party is a wonderful event to do just that – show appreciation for the staff that have excelled this past year,” says Rory du Plessis General Manager at Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat.   “It was incredibly difficult to pick outright winners, which shows the level of dedication and commitment each and every staff member has given not only to The Lodge, but also to the surrounding communities and the environment.”

MICHAEL NEL: General Manager, The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa

“An All-Star group from the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa will be attending the Red Carnation Hotel Collection’s Annual Staff Appreciation Gala Party in London in March. All the attendees have been selected on merit and are amongst the top performers at the Hotel. We are incredibly proud of the efforts they have made, in order to qualify for this highly sought after prize.”
